bridging the divide: scalarity & modality.
my dissertation (2014), which comprised three core projects, which continue to
engender new projects.
-
⊖gradable modal adjectives. (chs. 2-3) i argue that a
kennedy-style degree semantics can be given for gradable modals, while also
maintaining a kratzter-style modal semantics generally. a part of this
research was presented at SUB 16 (paper), and i'm currently working on a manuscript for submission to a
journal.
-
⊖modal modifiers. (ch. 5) a project looking at
modifiers of modals, like easily in the sentence
That could easily have fallen. the upshot is to provide a scalar
treatment of these modifiers while maintaining a more or less traditional
kratzerian treatment of modals. i presented work from this project at the
2013 LSA (poster,
long abstract); and at NELS 44 (paper).
-
⊚imprecision and modality. (ch. 4) a project seeking to
apply a theory of imprecision to modality in order to explain certain domain
shifting effects seen in modals and conditionals. this has spawned a
bigger project.
